Andrey Liyu
Engineer III

Andrey Liyu is an engineer with the Instrument Development Laboratory team. Primarily, he develops novel laboratory automation systems supporting EMSL and PNNL research. Currently, he is developing data acquisition and controls systems for Rutherford backscatter detectors and associated ion accelerator, Mössbauer detectors, nuclear magnetic resonance devices, and different types of spectrometers and mass-spectrometers.

In the late 1980s, Liyu began his career as a software engineer at the 600 MeV Proton Accelerator of Moscow, Meson Factory, Russia (1987 – 2003). In 1999, he worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN, in Switzerland. Before coming to PNNL, he worked with accelerators at the Spallation Neutron Source within Oak Ridge National Laboratory (2003 – 2007). During his accelerator career, he developed control systems to automate various beam diagnostic instruments. Liyu also has expertise in distributed and real-time control systems.

Research Interests

Liyu’s research interests include developing data acquisition and controls systems for scientific instruments, such as real-time and distributed control systems. He creates novel control systems from hardware to user interface.
