No, you cannot change the number of EAF files created if you use the
ga_eaf IO scheme.  You might try "io dra" or "io sf" though.

The amelioration of the file issues when running as root suggests a
problem not related to NWChem but rather your system configuration.
Try to figure out what the relevant issue is for your operating
system.
