Remote Access

There are two alternatives for accessing EMSL computers directly from the Internet: SecureID card or Secure Shell (ssh).

A SecureId Card is a credit-card size electronic device which generates one-time passwords for access to a PNNL gateway computer from which you can login to EMSL computers. For more information on obtaining a SecureId card send E-mail to unix-help@pnl.gov. The EMSL support groups do not administer the SecureID cards or PNNL gateway host.

Secure Shell (ssh) is an application that runs on PC, Mac, or UNIX computers and creates an encrypted channel to a handful of EMSL gateway hosts which 'listen' for ssh connections. Ssh provides more secure connections because the password is not exposed 'in the clear' on the Internet.
