Research

EMSL's mission is to provide integrated experimental and computational resources for discovery and technological innovation in the environmental molecular sciences to support the needs of DOE and the nation. To support this mission, EMSL has centered its research around select scientific themes that focus on research areas in biogeochemistry and subsurface science, interfacial chemistry and catalysis, structure/dynamics of biomolecules and biomolecular complexes, biochemical pathways, and aerosol chemistry. In addition, EMSL is provides a collaborative environment and cutting-edge scientific tools to implement Scientific Grand Challenges—coordinated multi-investigator research focused on resolving a major scientific problem of critical national interest. The science highlights in this section provide detail on research performed at EMSL within these science themes and Scientific Grand Challenges.
