Chongmin Wang Named Highly Cited Researcher for the Fifth Time
Materials scientist recognized on the 2023 Clarivate list

In 1983, Chongmin Wang was an undergraduate student studying metallurgical physics.
As part of his dissertation, Wang published his first article in 1985 on how hydrogen in pure nickel metal affects fatigue behavior.
Fast forward to 2023: Wang is now a Pacific Northwest National Laboratory fellow and a materials scientist at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) user facility, who has published more than 480 journal articles and has nearly 71,000 citations.
Wang has been named to Clarivate’s 2023 Highly Cited Researchers list—for the fifth time. The list recognizes researchers who are in the top one percent for cumulative citations in their field over a decade.
“I am pleased to see how our work is cited in a quantifiable way,” Wang said. “A quantitative evaluation of how a paper is cited is also in resonance with big data or data science in general. At this sense, I feel to be a highly cited researcher is beyond the general sensation of being an honor, rather it is a way of quantifying data.”
At EMSL, Wang is a leading scientist on transmission electron microscopy and is the custodian of EMSL’s scanning transmission electron microscope housed in EMSL. He interacts with EMSL users through discussion around how advanced electron microscopy and associated spectroscopy techniques can tackle their key science questions.
