JCESR - In Situ and Ex Situ Studies of Energy Storage Materials

EMSL Project ID
48681

Abstract

Innovation of energy storage technology depends critically on the fundamental understanding of the operating mechanism and dynamic interaction across different components in the storage unit. With the progress of advanced analytic and physical chemistry instrumentation it is possible to observe structure with high spatial and fast temporal resolution. This provides us a golden opportunity to probe the structural and chemical evolution of energy storage materials at the scale of range from atomic to mesoscale. Recently DOE has established a Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR). PNNL will contribute critically to the research effort of JCESR on characterization of energy storage materials. The microscopy and spectroscopy capabilities housed in EMSL will be the key components of this research effort. Solution and solid state in situ and ex situ NMR, aberration corrected TEM and dynamic TEM, and a number of other capabilities at EMSL provide unparalleled opportunities for a more in depth understanding of energy storage materials, and will be utilized in this research.
